Promoting Your Blog ….. The Secrets to Leaving Comments

You are going to learn the secrets of commenting on others blogs that ends up promoting your blog. Sound good? ….Of course! Setting up a win -win always works! Let’s dive in and learn the secrets.

Promoting Your Blog ….. The Secrets to Comments

When you leave a comment on a blog or forum lets make sure that it isn’t just spam. Your  objective is more than just leaving a link to to your site, you want to promoting your bloghelp out the other persons blog or forum. Well maybe you don’t ….. but it is a good idea to do it any way. ; )  If you help them get what they want, it will help you get what you want.

You should comment on a topic that is relevant to your blog site. Of course you may comment on what ever you want. However if you want to make it count for promoting your blog…… keep it relevant.

Make sure to actually read what has been published that you are commenting on. That way you can add to the discussion at hand .

3 Things I like to keep in mind When leaving comments

  1. Pick out something that you liked in the post. It could be “I like the idea of promoting my blog because I have a really great blog that is so great that …..” oops…… did that slip in?….. You get the idea. there should be something that you connect with …..” I have been thinking about doing the same …..” …..”I feel the same way as you, about taking care of…..”  ….” I see it differently than you, it seems to me that……”.
  2. “Leave something of your self” as Ken Pickard says over at thenetworkdad.com. You can lead in with something like “this is what I found when I…….”. This helps you show leadership or authority. That is if you want people to follow you! lol.
  3. Remember that what ever you say is a reflection of your self. You are promoting your blog. So keep it positive, even if you disagree. That is another thing that shows leadership.

Promoting Your Blog ….. The Secrets to Comments

It is a good idea to try and comment on 5-10 blogs for every one you publish. This has a compound effect  as you publish more and more content, you also get more and more links back to your site. not to mention traffic. With only 10 more blogs published you will have 50 to 100 back links. Not to bad! Just think of the additional exposure your getting. …….  I suppose we could call that promoting your blog.

Gravatars are another important item while commenting. It gives you a face to those that read your comments. It is a good idea to match it up with your blog so people start to recognize you…. always good for helping people to trust you. So….. just add it to your comments…..it is pretty easy. I will show you how  in Promoting Your Blog … Gravatar Avatar.

So there you have it. Remember to: 1. “Pick something you like” 2. “Leave something of your self” 3.”What you say is a reflection of your self”. these are a few keys to keep in mind when “Promoting your Blog” with comments.

  3. Akos Fintor

    Hey Stephen,

These are very easy to follow tips and I really liked the post’s simplicity.
I’m avoiding to read blog posts that are more than 1500 words unless the title really got to me 🙂

The only thing I don’t like about comments that everybody agrees with everything. That just doesn’t add up to me. But I guess I see the point, but there is a difference between genuinely nice and boot licking in my opinion.
I try to stay true to myself when commenting on blogs, however that action takes me sometimes to a “slippery territory” – if you know what I mean.

    Thanks for the share!
    Akos

  4. Stephen Peters

    Hey Akos,

Thank you for the kind comments….glad you enjoyed this post!
I’m totally with you that people don’t need to agree on everything.

Getting a difference of opinion is always welcome. Especially if it is done in positive tone. That may or may not keep you from the “slippery territory” depending on weather your conversing with someone looking for a fight.

    Come back and share often,
    Stephen

  5. Radu

    Hey Stephen,
Great insights my friend about blog commenting..If one eliminates the “I need backlinks stuff” and start being authentic is amazing how many insightful discussions and creative ideas can show up in the comments area.
I love the last part: the comment is a reflection of your self: your character, values and common sense 🙂 How you treat a itsy bitsy little comment is how you treat the big things in life too.
Glad to see that we’re both in MLSP:) Look forward to network more..Keep the posts coming!

    Cheers,
    Radu

  6. Theresa Torres

    Hi Stephen,
I agree with you that what we say is a reflection of ourselves that’s why I always try to share something I know about a topic whenever I leave a comment.
In doing this, there’s a better chance that my comment will not be ignored and will be posted.
I’m sure we’ll be meeting the same bloggers and it helps to be seen as someone reliable or insightful.
Besides, I’ve already taken the time to read the post so why not take the time to contribute something as well. It’s a nice feeling when you do that. 🙂
    Thanks for the tips!

    1. Stephen Peters

      Your welcome Theresa,

You nailed it. Well…. not literally to the wall. lol. I am sure you feel good about being that reliable insightful friend, because you did just as you said. Thanks for the comment! -Stephen

  7. Adrienne

Blog commenting, my favorite topic Stephen.

I started out visiting five blogs a day and commenting on them and then sharing their content on twitter. It didn’t take long before those people started to become interested in what I was writing about and they started visiting my place and sharing my content.

That’s how it all began for me and it’s been a snowball affect.

By the way, I think very highly of Ken Pickard so whatever he recommends doing as well, I say go for it.

Enjoyed your tips on blog commenting. Hope you’ve been enjoying your day!

    ~Adrienne

    1. Stephen Peters

Oh Wow Adrienne. You visited and commented here!

Your the master at comments I should have listed your name as a reference as well. Well every one! Here is a shout out for Adrienne click on Adrienne’s link and you will learn a lot.

I like the idea of, “5 a day”, you sure have developed a faithful following of “snowball affect”. : ) It must snow a lot at your blog with all those snowballs and comments. 🙂

My best to you my friend. You are always welcome here. You can straighten my out with all your experience.

      -Stephen

  8. Morris @ Get Great Coffee from the Nut inside

    Hi Stephen,
Would you have anything to say differently if you were giving advice who is selling a physical product, such as fresh roast coffee? Do you think it is easier or more difficult?
btw… first time here. Saw you on Adrienne’s site.
    enjoy

    1. Stephen Peters

      Hi Morris,

Glad to have you here. In internet marketing you need to establish rapport and enough trust to make your sale. It is the same for any product your selling, if the customer doesn’t trust you no sale. Blogging and commenting are an excellent way to reveal your self to potential customers and connect with them(rapport). Now why did I have to say all that to say yes. 🙂

I went and looked at your web site and blog. It looks very nice. Are you getting traffic? Hope so. Any other questions I would be happy to answer. Your always welcome here my friend.

      My Best,
      ~Stephen

      1. Morris @ Get Great Coffee from the Nut inside

        Thanks for the feedback.
No traffic yet. For the most part, the site is only a couple of weeks old.

As you may have noticed, only the Antigua Guatemala Coffee and Old Government Mocha Java Coffee were written up. I am also completing the operational components and working out a few kinks.

        1. Stephen Peters

          Your welcome Morris.

Congratulations on the beautiful new site. You have put a lot of work into it.

Keep working on traffic….target “keywords” of buyers….get more and more post on your “blog”…..and of course “comment” to steal others traffic. 🙂

          My Best,
          ~ Stephen

  9. Hajra

    Hey Stephen

I love comments! I love reading good valuable comments and how some readers actually put in the effort to make it a conversation. Though people think they don’t know what to comment at times; I say just speak your mind. Though some have a tough time leaving a nice comment you can always do better than “Great post, Loved it!”

Though this is great post and I loved it, I have so much to say. Why don’t people read other comments left and join in the conversation? Please feel free to disagree, I like people who speak their mind, give opinions and try debating. Be courteous but leave nice comments. Once I see your pretty comments I am tempted to get back to your blog and see that if your comments are so awesome, your posts must be!

    This was an interesting read!

    1. Stephen Peters

      Hi Hajra,

Good to see you here. Thank you for coming by, commenting and giving kudos. I can tell you love comments it shows in your writing style….. your having fun!
You never know what friends you can make while commenting. Or what an impact you can have on some one.
Come on back and keep commenting. You have the gift.
      ~Stephen

  10. Shelly

    Thanks for the tips!

  11. Brock Blohm

Agreed. It helps everyone. I help you by leaving a comment, as Google interprets it as a good thing, pushing you a little higher in the ranks for this keyword, and I get a back-link. No complaints by either of us. lol

    10 comments-to-post ratio. Good I was close 😉

    1. Stephen Peters

      Hi brock,

Don’t you just love it when every one gets what they want! Absolutely. And thanks for for your visit and comment. Come back often.

      My Best,
      ~Stephen

  12. Rey Rey

    Hi Stephen Peters,
I think you have a great idea here in order to gather a well said comment, But is’t not consideration for the spammer to keep going with their nonsense living? which you still accepting their informal thoughts? Thanks!

    1. Stephen Peters

🙂 You had me going there Rey!

But is’t consideration for spammer to delete their nonsense living. Informally that is! Which is the thought to say Your welcome.

There, now I am not sure what I said but you sure were effective in getting me to talk funny.

      My Best,
      ~Stephen

  13. Ken Pickard

    Stephen,

Blog commenting in action! I found your post from the comment you left on my blog. What a great way to meet other bloggers and trade cool tips.

First off I want to thank you for the shout out.

Secondly it shows that your blog commenting skills are taking off. You are attracting a good amount of people to your blog. This the the benefit of paying it forward.

Now to answer your question about what bugs me about comments…

Two things. When people don’t have a Gravatar of their smiling face and when they leave a simple one liner. They are missing the boat big time. the chance relationship could be a customer, business partner or JV…you never know!

    Ken Pickard
    The Network Dad

    1. Stephen Peters

      Wow Ken,

I am honored that you came to my site and commented to boot. Your such a caring leader in internet marketing. I have learned a lot for you about “commenting” and yes it does work! I agree about the Gravatar….. very important. Unless your known for walking around with a gray space covering you head. 🙂 Even then, you need to be well known.

      My Best,
      ~Stephen

  14. jacob

blog commenting is a way to get a buzz around. people will recognize you. it also gives you nice backlinks. do 10 backlinks per day that is 300 backlinks in 1 month. more exposure.

    1. Stephen Peters

      Hi Jacob,
Thank you for pointing out the math on 10 comments a day! It doesn’t seem like it would add up that fast. It just goes to show what consistency can do.
Thank you for taking the time to read and comment here.
      ~Stephen

  15. Donna Merrill

Hey Stephen, Thanks for the wise words! I totally agree with you. Leaving good comments has gotten me more readers on my blog. It is important to go out and find blogs and leave comments on them. The more you do, the better your blog will be. Some say it is too time consuming, but I rather have real readers on my blog with real comments instead of “nice Job” Those comments are not published.
I like to engage on the conversation of the blog. If there is something I disagree with, I would reply in a respectful manner. Or share my own experience of why that didn’t work for me.
In any case, comments are important and you have made a great point here.
    Thank YOU!
    Donna

  16. Stephen Peters

    Hi Donna,
Thank you for the comment “nice job”. 🙂 Some times I can’t help my self 🙂 .
I like your comment “Some say it is too time consuming,” (to leave comments). They don’t have time to build relationships, that business is built on.
    My Best,
    Stephen

  17. Juliana

    1. Stephen Peters

  18. Astro Gremlin

Stephen, commenting really works to increase ones Page Rank. I went on a commenting campaign and increased my search engine traffic. Met some nice people, too. 🙂

  19. Stephen Peters

That is a great idea! We will call it Binge commenting. You think we will get obese doing that? …nah ….probably will just make up poetry in our sleep that people will fall in love with. 🙂

So glad your google traffic climbed so well. Keep up the good work. ~Stephen

  20. Paul Salmon

I have been blogging for almost 5 years, but it wasn’t until about a year ago that I truly saw the power of commenting. As soon as I started commenting on different blogs, I noticed the traffic to my site increased. By utilizing the commentluv plugin on those blogs, I also notice traffic from the commentluv links.

Usually posts that provide a list of items, I will usually mention a few items that I thought were the most important aspect of the topic. Or I like to add my own item to the list ;).

    1. Stephen Peters

      Hi Paul,

I love the before and after Picture. 🙂 Commenting and CommentLuv have made a difference in traffic here also! Referring to points or adding to is a great way to leave relevant comments.

Wow you have an authority site. I had to check it out. I will leave you a comment or two.
      My Best,
      Stephen

  21. Andrew

thank you for sharing these very helpful tips i have never been a good person with leaving comments, i never know what to say, hopefully your post will help me in the future thank you very much, Great post.

    1. Stephen Peters

      Hi Andrew,

Glad to be of help. I understand where you are coming from, and that is exactly what the 3 main tips are there for to help overcome that gap.

      1. Something you liked
      2. Something of your self
      3. What you say reflects on your self

You nailed all three. Of course you already knew that!

Thank you for coming by and leaving your thoughtful comment.

      My best,
      Stephen

  22. Astro Gremlin

Stephen, I really liked the part when you said something along the lines of “find something to like.” About me: I’ve been a commenter since landing on Earth, and sometimes it’s a sincere pleasure, and other times I feel as though, golly, I don’t even like this blog but I desperately want a backlink. OK enough about me. I just realized I commented on this post months ago. Oh well, it happens when I look at quality comments on my blog and come back looking around a blog I actually enjoy reading.

    1. Stephen Peters

Glad you landed on earth Astro Gremlin. What would we do with out you. ~Stephen

  23. David Leonhardt

Leaving something of yourself is indeed very important. It makes the difference between a comment that any spammer could have left, and one that only you can leave. I was actually noticing this when commenting at another blog a few minutes ago. I was entering a Rafflecopter giveaway, and one of the ways to enter was to leave a comment. So a lot of people were leaving very quick and lame comments just to enter the giveaway. But to me, that’s copping out.

    1. Stephen Peters

Hi David, I couldn’t agree more. Your the “one” who got the most promotional value out of your effort. Thank you for your comment ~Stephen

  24. Shiful Alam

Great ideas, Stephen! Additionally, I think, we should read the entire post in order to understand what the writer is saying. If we do it, we surely can make a relevant comment.

    Thanks for the great post.

    1. Stephen Peters

Great point Shiful. How can we comment unless we have read…. or “listened” to know how response will come across? ~Stephen

      1. Roxy Chan

Thank you ,Stephen. I really liked the idea behind your way of blog commenting. Did some few alternate ways to comment but failed. Thank for your tips, it worked like magic! Great learning from you.
        With Smile,
        Roxy

  25. Charles Holmes

Great points, Stephen. I really like your point about being positive, even if you disagree with the blog post. There is so much negative stuff on the internet, that people are naturally attracted to positive people. I really enjoy your blog and hope you have a happy and prosperous 2014 and beyond!

    Chuck Holmes

    1. Stephen Peters

Thank you Charles … Positive is more attractive than negative.

  26. MINHAJ UDDIN

  27. Ashley Jones

According to my opinion, the content is the king but the backlinks are the army. So building quality, relevant and diverse backlinks to an EPIC content should go hand in hand! That post is the true example of how content should be presented!

    Regards
    AShley Jones

    1. Stephen Peters

I like the metaphor Ashley and thank you for the kind words.
